| In order to join the MDSA you must pass a swim test administered by MDSA, fill out an application, and sign two releases of liability, one for NY State Park and another for MDSA. You must be at least 18 years old, or 16 if your parent or guardian is an MDSA member and accompanies you to the MDSA beach.
You must adhere to the MDSA rules (click here to go to the MDSA Beach and Rules section) and pay annual dues of $15.00. The dues pay our insurance policy and other administrative costs -- MDSA leaders are all volunteers. It will save time at the swim test if you download and fill out the forms in advance: Application Form (PDF) and NY Release (PDF) as well as the test schedule Testing 2008 Schedule (PDF). Applications can also be obtained at the test or you can pick them up in advance at Rock & Snow, 44 Main Street, New Paltz. Test reservations are no longer required. If you need more information you can call our recorded message at 845-895-5012 or send an email to info@minnewaskaswimmers.org. PLEASE NOTE: Ongoing thunderstorms may cancel a test; call Moriello Pool at 255-1700 or Rosendale Pool 658-9347 if in doubt. The park will open for swimming Saturday, June 14 at 10 AM and close Monday, September 1 at 7:30 PM. |
| The test requires 500 yards continuous swimming: 25 yards crawl, 25 yards free style back stroke, 25 yards breast stroke, 25 yards side stroke and 400 yards additional swimming any stroke plus 3 minutes of treading water. (This translates into 20 lengths (10 round trips) of the pool -- 1 crawl, 1 backstroke, 1 breaststroke, 1 side stroke, and 16 lengths any style -- plus 3 minutes treading water.) THERE IS NO TIME LIMIT. Most people complete the test in under 30 minutes, but you can take as long as you need.
